Quail & Van Eldik Star on Australian Postage Stamps.

One of Australia’s most popular sports, Lawn Bowls, is the subject of a new stamp issue from Australia Post. This issue coincides with the 2012 World Bowls Championships, which will be hosted by Australia and comprises one domestic base-rate (60c) stamp and one large letter rate ($1.20) stamp available 1 November 2012.

Lawn bowls engages more than 240,000 playing members in almost 2,000 bowling clubs throughout the country. Every year more than 490,000 people regularly participate in the sport, particularly in country areas, where clubs outnumber those in metropolitan areas by more than two to one.

“We are delighted to celebrate the sport of Lawn Bowls in Australia with its rich history and traditions. Australia is hosting one of this year’s premier bowling events and we hope this stamp issue will resonate with lawn bowls enthusiasts and the general public alike,” said Australia Post Philatelic Manager, Mr Michael Zsolt.

The 2012 World Bowls Championships will be held in Adelaide from 24 November to 9 December. Held every four years, this will be the fourth time the event has been hosted by Australia.

The first recorded game of lawn bowls in Australia took place in 1845 at Sandy Bay, Tasmania, between a Mr T Burgess and Mr F Lipscombe. The following year Australia’s first bowling club was established at Sandy Bay. The newspapers reported that the club comprised “upward of 50 subscribers of the highest respectability”. The oldest Australian bowls club still in existence is the Melbourne Bowling Club, established in 1864.

Australia has long been near the forefront of world bowls. The first formal bowling association in the world was established here in 1880 – the New South Wales Bowling Association – followed soon after by the Victorian Bowling Association. The first ladies’ bowling association in the world was also Australian, the Victorian Ladies’ Bowling Association, founded in 1907.

Lawn bowls attracts players from diverse backgrounds and age groups. In recent years the sport has become especially popular with younger people, many of whom number among our top players.

Bowls Australia is the national sporting organisation responsible for the leadership, development and management of lawn bowls in Australia and is a not-for-profit organisation. Bowls Australia’s members are the nine state and territory bowls associations.

The stamps were designed by John White of the Australia Post Design Studio, based on photographs by Joe Sabljak of the greens of the national office of Bowls Australia in Northcote, Melbourne.

The Lawn Bowls Australia stamp products include a minisheet, first day cover, stamp pack, and a maxicard set of two. The stamps and associated products are available from participating Australia Post retail outlets, via mail order on 1800 331 794 and online at auspost.com.au/stamps from 1 November 2012 while stocks last.

Disappointment fuel for bowler at worlds

Rebecca Quail hopes achieving one long-held bowls ambition will make up for missing out on another, as Rob Shaw reports for The Examiner.

The Invermay bowler narrowly lost this week’s national champion of champions singles, which would have earned her a spot in the world titles, but aims to use that disappointment as motivation when she embarks on her first world championship campaign next month.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to compete in one and I’m thrilled to get the opportunity,” Quail said yesterday from Adelaide, where she is training ahead of the world championships being held in the city from November 24 to December 9.

“They only come around every four years, it’s about 20 since we last hosted it and it’s the pinnacle for bowling, probably followed by the Commonwealth Games. This is our Olympics in a sense.

“We’ve got a fairly strong team and hope to put it together.”

The 24-year-old Tasmanian Institute of Sport scholarship holder will attempt to become the first Tasmanian lawn bowler to win a world title when she skips the pairs and contests the fours at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay bowling clubs.

She said losing this week’s champion of champions final to national teammate Karen Murphy in Queanbeyan may help her quest.

“Although it was a little disappointing, it was a really strong competitive match to play leading in to the worlds,” she said.

“It was a close game. She (Murphy) jumped out to an early start, then I fought back, then she went 17-10 up, I almost got level but I could not hold her off and she finished it.

“We both played quite well, she just had a few more good shots than me, which got her over the line.”

The 21-18 defeat to her New South Wales opponent was Quail’s first appearance in a competition she had long admired and one she needed to win her club, regional and state titles to qualify for.

“It is the one event that gives everyone an opportunity because it starts with the club championships and goes right up to the worlds,” Quail said.

“We have the Australian open singles and others, but this is definitely one of the biggest and held in high regard because the winner goes to the world champion of champions in Christchurch next year.

“So right from winning the club championships I had my sights set on that and finished one step away.”

In the men’s pairs, Tasmania’s Michael Daniels and Keghan Booth were unable to prevent Jindalee duo Jay Cross and Des Cann Jnr from capturing their maiden national title when they claimed six of the last seven ends to seal a 16-10 victory.

Australian Team for the World Championships 2012

Invermay bowler Bec Quail will attempt to become the first Tasmanian Lawn Bowler to win a World Title after Australia named their line up to contest the World Championships in Adelaide this year.

Quail will Skip the Pairs alongside World number 6 Kelsey Cottrell and will also Skip the Fours with a star studded line up before her of Australian Female bowler of the Year Natasha Van Eldik, Australian Captain and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Lynsey Armitage and Cottrell. While the ever reliable, World number 4 and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Karen Murphy will play in the Blue Ribbon Singles event.

“The announcement of the star-studded ‘Jackaroos’ line-up that will contest the 28-nation quadrennial event, to be held at Lockleys and Holdfast Bay bowling clubs in Adelaide from November 24 to December 9, comes off the back of an intense four-day selection camp that took place in Warilla, NSW last week.
Opting to make only two changes from the 15-nation Asia Pacific Championships team, the selectors have placed their faith in one of the youngest Australian line-ups to take to the greens at an international event, with the average age of the squad sitting at a youthful 30-years.”

Black Douglas Women’s Master Singles Tournament.

Well I experienced my first Black Douglas Women’s Singles Tournament at South Tweed Bowls Club last week and I am really pleased that I went up to compete in it this year, it will definately be a tournament that becomes a permanent fixture on my calendar.  Having worked our way through sectional play on the first day, and then through another section each in the post sectional play it left four finalist for the semi finals.  Beth Quinlan and Lynsey Armitage made up the first semi, while I was drawn to play Karen Murphy in the other semi.  Kaz came out firing from the first bowl and really put the pressure on me throughout the game and unfortunately I just couldn’t up with any answers in return.  Karen ended up with a convincing win against me  25-12.  The other semi final was a far more exciting finish between Beth and Lynsey.  Beth was the one out of the blocks early on that rink taking a comanding lead up 12-0 at one point, but throughout the match Lynsey kept fighting back and getting a few shots here and there that ended up getting her in the lead 24-23.  With Beth holding 1 and attempting to add another one to take out the game with the last bowl of the end, she came through too heavy to give the shot away and give Lynsey the win to put her through to the final.  However Karen carried her morning form into the afternoon final to take out a record equallying third Black Douglas Title winning 25-14.

Bec Quail Wins Tasmanian Champion of Champion Singles.

Invermay Bowler Bec Quail has claimed this years Tasmanian Women’s Champion of Champions Singles Title after defeating Mary Beaumont of Latrobe 25-19 and Di Petri from Rosny Park 25-9.  Quail progressed to the State playoffs after winning the Invermay Bowls Club Women’s Singles followed by the Northern Champion of Champion where she defeated the other Northern Club Singles Winners.  Bec will now head to the ACT in October where she will represent Tasmania in the National Champion of Champions.  The following is courtesy of Bowls Australia.
After its successful reintroduction in Tasmania in 2010, the time-honoured National Champion of Champions event is poised to ignite in 2012.
While the 2011 singles winners Jan Agar and world number two Brett Wilkie prepare for the 2012 World Champion of Champions in Cyprus, the singles and pairs Champion of Champions winners from each state and territory will battle it out for the 2012 title in the ACT. The winners of this year’s singles titles will be nominated to World Bowls to play in the 2013 World Champion of Champions.
Each state representative will play three rounds of sectional play against the other states drawn in their pool, before the section winners go on to play for the national title.

Quail Re-Signs with Greenmaster

Bec Quail is pleased to announce her re-signing with Greenmaster Bowls for a further 2 years.  Bec has been a member of the Greenmaster Team since October 2005 when she was an Australian Junior Representative.  She has began 2012 in great fashion after claiming the Tasmanian Women’s Singles Crown in January, and capping it off with the Bowls North D.L. Reid Singles Title (pictured above).  All of this is on the back of a wonderful 2011 after Bec claimed her first International Gold Medal at the Asia Pacific Championships in the Triples alongside Lynsey Armitage (S) and Kelsey Cottrell (L), and a Silver in the Fours with Karen Murphy, Armitage and Natasha Van Eldik.  “I am extremely happy to be extending my relationship with Greenmaster, they have been a wonderful support to me in helping me get to where I am and my Premiers still remain my preferred choice of bowl in all conditions” Bec said.

Aus Open Day 2

Well today ended up being somewhat of a killing field for us Tasmanian women today. Carla and I couldn’t keep our good form going unfortunately losing on the last end.  We both played a good consistent game but it just didn’t seem to quite go our way.  We drew the first set which meant the winner of the next set won the game, and we kept the crowd on the edge of their seats when we were all square going into the last end of the second set, and lost two shots.  All our hopes then fell onto Carol who had made it through to the final 16 of the women’s singles where she met new Australian Squad Member Sarah Boddington.  They had one of the best games of the day with a great standed of bowls from both sides and they went right down to the wire.  Carol came out firing winning the first set, then Boddo fought back claiming the second set and also winning the tiebreak over Carol 3-2.

The men were our shining lights of the day with one of our men’s pairs and the men’s triples claiming first up wins for the competition today.  Brothers Will and Sam Springer were first up this morning and they came out firing winning the first set 11-5, then they narrowly went down 7-8 in the second set, but they got it where it counted and claimed the tiebreak 3-1.  The men’s triples combination also came good after a little hiccup in the first set going down 8-11, but then they really turned it on claiming the second set 9-2.  Fortunately this good form continued and they blistered through the tiebreak in extraordinary fashion 7-0.

First up tomorrow for our remaining Tassie crew is the women’s triples at 11.30am where I have scored some really bad luck as I meet my good old mates from down South; Sonia, Robyn and Carol.  But I guess w know we’ll have at least one Tasmanian through to the next round! Also tomorrow is the next rounds of the men’s pairs and triples where we’ll be cheering our boys on very loudly!  The weather forecast is not looking good for tomorrow which is a bit like it was today.  We had a downpour during the last couple of ends of our pairs this morning, the temperature has stayed quite comfortable though.  The greens are very slow though and every green is different which makes it very hard to get in any kind of rythm from one green to the next, so all in all it has been a very trying few days.

It is an early start for me tomorrow though with a photo shoot at 8am where Tash, Claire, Mark, Brett, Aron and myself are going to have our photos taken to be on a postage stamp!  How cool is that! So I am really looking forward to having some fun with them tomorrow.  I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow night.
